The Escondido Police Department is offering crime prevention tips so you can avoid being the victim of a costly theft.
Never leave your motor vehicle running when unattended. This is one of the easiest ways to lose your vehicle.
If you have a garage, use it, and remove the key from the ignition. If you don’t have a garage, park in a driveway instead of the street if possible.
Steering wheel or steering-column collar locks are visual deterrents as well as mechanical challenges.
Never leave a spare key in your vehicle.
Keep your valuables out of sight or out of your vehicle. Valuables left in plain view are an open invitation for thieves. Items such as cell phones, iPods, GPS, pagers, backpacks, purses, CDs, and valuable clothing are prime targets to criminals.
Many thieves look for the easy opportunity. Remember to lock your vehicle, turn off the ignition, remove your keys and take valuables with you. Don’t make the criminal’s job any easier!
Thieves want to get in and out quickly to avoid detection. Use the above listed tips to help you not become a victim.
To report any suspicious activities in your neighborhood, you may contact the Police Department directly, or you may make an unidentified call on our Anonymous Tip Line at 760-743-TIPS (8477) or via our Web site at police.escondido.org.
