Jackson

Sergeant Craig Miller and Detective Damian Jackson of the Escondido Police Department recently competed in the Road Cycling events at the United States Police and Fire National Championships, held here in San Diego, with Detective Damian Jackson capturing the top honor and winning the national championship title in the men’s overall stage race; comprised of five consecutive races over five consecutive days.

Jackson went into the final day’s road race in a three-way tie for the overall spot and in the final uphill sprint finish, was able to edge out the other riders for the overall win of the week-long National Championship series.  The US Police and Fire National Championships are held annually and open to all Police Officers and Firefighters throughout the country.

The win was especially gratifying after a year of hard training and sacrifice and coming off of last year’s Police and Fire World Championship held in New York, where Jackson and Miller competed against other police officers and fire fighters from around the globe and finished 11th and 24th respectively.  “For us, the world’s was a great primer and motivator to do even better this year.” Jackson said.  Both plan on continuing to compete and say this is only the beginning.  “This race might be over, but it’s definitely not break time now…I’m already looking ahead at bigger events down the road”  Jackson said, “The World Championships are in Ireland next year and I’d love to go over there for those, especially wearing the stars and stripes and representing the US as a national champion….that would be pretty huge.”

Jackson and Miller also have their sights set on competing in the Race Across America next year or “RAAM” as it’s also known.  This is a timed race which starts at the Oceanside pier and finishes in Annapolis, Maryland in only 8 days.  “I’ve always wanted to do the RAAM since I was a kid” Jackson said, “It’s one of those bucket list events in life.  Besides, I couldn’t think of a better partner to do it with than Craig and I’d be willing to bet we’d win that one for Escondido too!”
