CONTACT: Media Relations (760) 839-4444

On July 31, 2012, at approximately 5:50 P.M., the Escondido Police Department Communications Center received numerous emergency calls of a shooting that had just occurred in the 1100 Block of East Mission Avenue. The Communications Center also received calls of a vehicle that struck a telephone pole in the same area. Officers responded and arrived on scene to find a male subject with a gunshot wound to his head. It appears that the shooting and collision were the same incident. Escondido Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and transported the injured subject to a local area hospital. Witnesses indicate that a male suspect shot at the van while it was eastbound on Mission Avenue. After the suspect fired his weapon he fled the area. Police searched for the suspect, but were unable to locate him. The suspect is described as a dark skinned Hispanic male, approximately 17-18 years old with short, spiked black hair and bloodshot eyes. He was last seen wearing a plain white t-shirt, baggy blue pants and white shoes.

The victim in this incident has been released from the hospital and is making progress towards recovery.

Police have interviewed many witnesses.  A composite sketch has been completed and is being released to the media at this time.  The Escondido Police Department is seeking anyone with any information to contact Detective Erik Witholt at (760) 839-4763.
