At approximately 0656 hours, Jan 26, 2014, officers of the San Diego Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of I-15 and Aero Drive.  The driver fled and a pursuit was initiated. During the pursuit a male passenger inside the vehicle made a 9-1-1 call that was taken by San Diego Police Department Communications Center.  During the conversation it was established that the male passenger was forcing the female driver to flee from the police.  During the conversation the suspect made threats that he had a gun pointed at the driver, who the suspect identified as a “hostage.”  The suspect said he had kidnapped the girl.  During the conversation the suspect threatened to shoot the driver/hostage. The suspect said he was armed with a gun and that he also had an explosive device.  The pursuit continued northbound I-15 into the city of Escondido on Centre City Parkway.  The vehicle, which had two flat tires from the deployment of spike strips, came to a stop on North Centre City Parkway, north of Country Club Lane.  After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect was shot and killed by a police officer from San Diego Police Department who fired a single shot.  The female hostage was rescued. She was transported to Palomar Medical Center for injuries she sustained during the incident.
