On Thursday, April 12, 2012, detectives from the Escondido Police Department Crimes of Property Unit arrested Jose Luis Moedano Gutierrez, 27 years, for Identity Theft. Gutierrez had been working for an Escondido company the last four years by using someone else’s social security number.
In this case, the SSN that Gutierrez used belonged to a 5 year old girl. The girl's father was notified of the identity theft by the Department of Public Social Services when he applied for benefits in Riverside County. The girl’s father filed a police report with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Since the suspect was using the victim’s social security number for employment with an Escondido business, the Sheriff’s Department forwarded the case to Escondido PD for follow-up.
Escondido Detectives followed up on the information provided. They confirmed the story and arrested Gutierrez at his current jobsite. Gutierrez is a prior felony deport and is in the country illegally. He is a Mexican citizen.
Gutierrez was booked into Vista Detention Facility for violation of PC 530.5(a) - Identity Theft and PC 114 – Use of False Citizenship Documents. While at Vista Detention Facility, Immigration and Custom Enforcement issued a hold on Gutierrez.
