On April 10, 2011, the Escondido Police Department conducted a Motorcycle Safety/Sobriety Patrol from 1:00 PM until 7 PM. The additional officers were patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Officers were looking for drivers and riders who were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The goal included cracking down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists as well as other vehicle drivers that could lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities.

During the 6 hour detail, 34 traffic stops were conducted, 11 of those were motorcyclists. The following are results of the event: 

  • 0 field sobriety tests were administered
  • 0 drivers were arrested for DUI
  • 2 vehicles were impounded; 1 driver had a suspended driver’s license and 1 driver did not have a driver’s license.
  • 21 citations were issued during this sweep. 4 were issued to motorcyclists, one of which was for no motorcycle endorsement.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
