FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: OFFICER SCOTT WALTERS 760.839.4939
On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at about 1:45 PM, Escondido Police and Fire Communications received a report of a traffic collision of a motorcycle vs. pickup truck at the entrance of Palomar Medical Center's driveway on the Grand Ave entrance.
Officers arrived about four minutes later to find a black motorcycle and dark blue Chevy pickup had collided on Grand Ave between the driveway of the hospital and the intersection of Grand Ave at Grape St. The driver of the motorcycle was down in the roadway with serious injury to one of his legs, torso, and head. The driver of the pickup truck was still in the truck and he was not injured. The pickup truck driver was the only person in that truck.
The driver of the motorcyclist was taken into the Emergency Department of the hospital. His condition is considered life-threatening at this time.
Based on the position of the motorcycle and the pickup truck and statements, it appears the motorcycle was heading eastbound on Grand Ave and cresting the hill near the driveway to the hospital. The pickup truck driver was heading eastbound on Grand Ave and making a U-turn at about Grape St to head westbound on Grand Ave. Before the truck finished the turn, the motorcycle struck it.
This investigation is still under investigation and being conducted by the Escondido Police Department's Traffic Division - no citations have been issued. If anyone witnessed the collision and did not speak to an officer on-scene, please contact Officer Scott Walters @ 760.839.4939 (reference Case Number 11.11533).
