During the New Year’s Holiday weekend, the Escondido Police Department staffed roving DUI patrols on Friday night, December 31, 2010. Three motorists were arrested for DUI. On January 1, 2011, the Department conducted a DUI Sobriety / Drivers License Checkpoint on West Grand Avenue near Spruce Street, from 6:00 PM until 12:00 AM. The emphasis of this enforcement activity was to detect intoxicated and unlicensed drivers as well as to provide a highly visible operation and provide an educational opportunity to deter driving under the influence.
Other results from this checkpoint included:
1,416 vehicles entered the checkpoint
918 vehicles were screened in primary
43 vehicles sent to secondary (drivers who could not produce a drivers license or who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs)
3 field sobriety tests were administered
3 drivers were arrested for DUI. One of those had recently finished his probation for a prior DUI offense.
16 vehicles were impounded at this checkpoint, 5 drivers did not have auto insurance, 6 drivers had a suspended drivers license and 9 drivers did not have a drivers license
20 citations were issued at this checkpoint
1 Child Restraint Seat were correctly reinstalled for parents free of charge
Educational material about our checkpoints was provided to motorists passing through the checkpoint. This detail was conducted in conjunction with the North County Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Council, the San Diego County DUI Probation Team, and Mothers against Drunk Driving.
