FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT:  Lt. Chris Wynn, 760-839-4700

On Friday, June 17, 2011, detectives from the Escondido Police Department’s Family Protection Unit arrested Mario Humerez, 35 years old, of San Marcos for having an inappropriate sexual contact with an underage student.  Humerez is an AVID teacher at Valley High School in Escondido.  The arrest occurred in the 400 Block of North Escondido Boulevard where Humerez believed he was going to meet the victim.  Humerez was met by detectives and was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation was initiated when the 19-year-old female victim reported the relationship to police.  The relationship began around September 2007 when the victim was only 16 years old.  For approximately 16 months, Humerez and the victim were involved in an inappropriate relationship.  During that timeframe, an inappropriate teacher/student relationship occurred and there were two incidents of sexual contact.  Both of the incidents occurred in Humerez’s classroom.  It is not believed that Humerez and the victim ever engaged in sexual intercourse.

Humerez was interviewed at the Escondido Police Department and was booked into the Vista Detention Facility for PC 288a(b)(1), oral copulation of a minor and PC 289(h), sexual penetration of a minor.

Anyone with information about this crime or other crimes that may have been committed by Humerez are asked to contact Detective Julie Barnes at 760-839-4758.
