On February 26, at about 9:28 PM, the Escondido Police Department received a report of a man who was hit by a car in the 1600 block of E. Washington Ave. Officers arrived minutes later to find an 18 year-old male down in the roadway and bleeding from his head. The man had been struck by a gray Hyundai which was still on scene.
The Fire Department responded and took the man to a local area hospital. He has been diagnosed with significant head trauma and his condition is considered life threatening. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. At this time, alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was riding his skateboard eastbound in the #2 eastbound lane of Washington Ave. The involved vehicle was also heading in the same direction and in the same lane. According to witnesses, as the pedestrian attempted to turn left in an apparent attempt to cross northbound, he was struck by the vehicle. The pedestrian was identified as Jason Mendez, an Escondido resident.
This investigation is ongoing at this time and is being conducted by Officer Russell Gay of the Traffic Division. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Officer Gay at the above phone number.
