On September 29, 2015 at about 6:49 pm, officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the area of Washington Ave and Broadway regarding a serious injury collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.  Upon arrival, officers found a male and his bicycle lying in the northbound lanes of Broadway and a white GMC pickup was stopped on the east side of Broadway north of Washington Ave. The male sustained significant injuries and Escondido Fire transported him to Palomar Hospital for treatment.

According to driver and witness statements, and physical evidence at the scene, it appears the 16 year old bicyclist was riding east on Washington Ave and crossed Broadway against a red light. The driver of the white truck, 42 year old Amy Leichtfuss of Wildomar, had a green for northbound Broadway and struck the bicyclist as he rode in front of her.

Leichtfuss has a valid driver’s license and alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor at this time.

The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Thomas Venable of the Traffic Division.  Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Officer Venable at the above phone number.
